Today could have been good - a whole day with nothing to do but vote and work on my conclusion. Then the credit ran out on the gas. This is partly my fault - I should’ve topped it up yesterday. But I was a bit short on time to go to the shop, and emergency credit means having to buy more topup next time. And it had 50p on - for some silly reason I expected that to last until morning given that I had no plans to use the heating or hot water until that point anyway. And even when the pilot light went out, hopefully it would just be a matter of putting some money on the wretched thing and relighting it, right? No such luck… So I am only just at a stage of starting to work, with half an ear out for the gas company to ring me back. This morning needs some redeeming features, and it needs them listing:
This is nothing like as bad as when the same thing happened in January. The weather is relatively warm - I’m not going to be freezing while wearing as many jumpers as I can still move around in.
I have the know-how to cope without central heating or hot tap water, thanks to living for nearly two months without them over the winter. In particular I know that the shower and washing machine have their own electric sources of water heating.
I knew to ring the gas company straight away this time rather than to dither around waiting for my landlord to do something, as I already know they aren’t meant to do anything to the meter. As I only rang them half an hour ago, I can still hold out hope for something happening.
And in non-gassy news (haha):
I voted according to my beliefs, or as close as electoral politics can get to my beliefs.
I averted a meltdown over crappy gas meter and potential Tory election win - for now.
I am still hoping to get a bit of work done before lunchtime.
I have chocolate biscuits!
